AWARD PROGRAMS

The MNSSAR, the Minneapolis Chapter and the St. Paul Chapter of the MNSSAR sponsor several programs to recognize activities that exemplify the values of our Society. These programs include the presentation of Bronze Good Citizenship Medals for high school seniors who show excellence in scholarship and patriotism; Eagle Scout Essay Contest awards for scouts who write exceptional historic and patriotic essays; Flag Certificates for businesses that fly the American flag; and ROTC Medals for cadets who show excellence in military bearing and leadership.

ROTC and Bronze Good Citizenship Medal Program

ROTC Awards — Once again the Minnesota Society presented medals at all the units in Minnesota. There are seven ROTC units in Colleges and Universities and twelve JROTC units in high schools.

Bronze Good Citizenship Medal Program The Minneapolis Chapter has one of the largest programs in the nation for this award. This Spring we awarded the medal in 24 area high schools and one Naval Sea Cadets squadron.

Medals were also awarded to eleven St. Paul area high school students by the Saint Paul Chapter this year.

The criteria for the recipient of the Bronze Good Citizenship Medal is Scholarship, Leadership, Character, Service, and an appreciation of Patriotism.

Eagle Scout Scholarship and Awards Program

Any Eagle Scout currently registered in an active unit, who is under the age of 19 are eligible to enter this contest. To do so, you must complete an application form, complete a four generation ancestor chart, and write a patriotic theme of 500 words or less, with bibliography.

All EntrantsSAR Certificate of Recognition and Patch
Each Eagle Scout who enters the contest this year will receive an SAR Certificate of Recognition and a distinguished BSA/SAR Scholarship Patch.

BSA Council WinnersBronze Eagle Scout Medal
All entries will be judged to determine the eight Boy Scout Council winners. The winner for each Boy Scout Council will be presented with an SAR Bronze Eagle Scout Medal in recognition of this accomplishment.

State WinnerSpreading Wings Desk-Top Bronze Eagle Trophy
Council winners will be judged in a statewide competition to select the Minnesota winner. The Minnesota winner will be invited, with his parents, to attend the annual SAR George Washington Day observance and dinner in Minneapolis in February, 2012. There he will be recognized and presented with a handsome Spreading Wings Desk-Top Bronze Eagle Trophy.

National Winner$8,000 Scholarship and Trip
The Minnesota winner’s application and patriotic essay will be submitted to the National Society SAR as a candidate for the $8,000 scholarship and trip to the SAR Congress (annual convention) in July, 2012. A second place and runner-up will be chosen to receive a $4,000 and $2,000 scholarship.
