New Member Discount in April

Supplemental Application example

In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Lexington and Concord, the National SAR is offering a 50% discount ($75) on application fees for new members. This is a perfect time to join. If you are already a member and have eligible relatives, this is a perfect time to recruit them, or to buy them gift memberships.

To qualify for the discount, the application must be completed, fully approved, and paid by 24 April. All applications must be sent from the State Society to the National office; the earlier deadline ensures that the fully approved application will be postmarked before the end of the month. (If you send an application directly to the national office yourself instead of sending it through a state society, the national office will not process it.)

Applicants to the SAR must join through a State Society; people living overseas may join the International Society or a country-specific society (e.g. the France or Germany Societies). Each society adds on application fees plus state and possibly chapter dues.

Non-Minnesotans are welcome to join the Minnesota Society; we are a relatively small society (230 members) and have relatively low dues and fees.

Here are some restrictions on discounted April applications:

  • It takes time to collect the necessary evidence to support an application. The State Genealogist will not approve an application that lacks needed evidence. The genealogists at the national office will also reject such applications. There is no point to arguing with a rejection by the State Genealogist: he’s very familiar with the expectations of the national office.
  • If you have a close relative who is already a member of the SAR or DAR and you have birth and marriage certificates to prove the relationship, you should use that relative’s lineage as evidence.
  • Other application discounts don’t apply. For example, when you submit 2 or more applications that use the same lineage to the patriot ancestor, there is already a $75 discount on the second and subsequent applications. Only one discount can apply.

Here is a summary the process:

  1. Contact the state Membership Coordinator, who is also our state genealogist and registrar. He will provide guidance on filling out the application.
  2. If you are using a relative’s SAR or DAR application for evidence, download an official “Record Copy” of the application from the web site. There is generally a charge to download a Record Copy.
  3. Make photos or scans of certified copies of birth certificates and marriage certificates required to show the connection before the related SAR/DAR member and the applicants.
  4. Enter the applicant’s lineage into the online application at SAR.ORG. This should identify each ancestor leading from the applicant back to the patriot. Enter birth and death dates and locations as long as they also appear on your submitted evidence, that is, the SAR/DAR record copy and birth/marriage certificates.
  5. Send the scans of your evidence to the Membership Coordinator when your application is filled out.
  6. The Membership Coordinator will review your evidence and adjust your application as needed. Once it is ready, the Coordinator prints the application on official paper and sends it to you for your signature.
  7. You send back the signed form which is forwarded to the State Secretary. You may mail a check to pay for your application or use MNSAR’s PayPal account.
  8. The State Secretary will sign and forward your completed application to National once all the pieces arrive. The Secretary should have everything before April 24 to ensure it can take advantage of the April discount.

I know of several who would be interested, but with only three weeks remaining between the time this notice was received and when the application must be “approved” by National, makes this offer ridiculous. Whoever thought this up has lost their mind. It’s an impossibility. Or do I read this incorrectly?

It’s an ongoing problem with the national organization. They develop these good ideas and fail to work out how the state societies are supposed to deal with them. The deadline should be enforced by the state societies and National should work from there.

Originally I heard that they were going to enforce the deadline by demanding that the applications arrive by mail before the end of the month. I didn’t see the final rule (deadline based on postmark) until 1-2 days ago.
